Lakshini obtained her B.Sc. from Bangalore University, India and began her research career at the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka. In 2010, she took the courageous decision to move to Perth, to pursue higher education and a career in science. Recently graduated with a PhD in Medicine (UWA), Lakshini is passionate about understanding the molecular mechanisms leading to diabetic eye complications. Currently working as a Postdoctoral Research Officer at the Dobney Hypertension Centre, she is an accomplished scientist and a teacher and has done so without compromising her compassion, professional empathy and commitment to her family and friends. She is a young role model in STEM and has educated and inspired the community and the next generation of medical researchers.
